Choosing Marble in Italy

Variations on white marble are all the rage in high-end custom homes these days, taking over kitchens, master baths, and even secondary bathrooms (see our latest cover story here, which features Calacatta marble in multiple applications). Picking out just the right slabs is an art in itself. Most architects head to the local stone yard and pick the best that’s available. But architect Ankie Barnes, FAIA, of Washington, D.C.-based Barnes Vanze Architects, recently headed with a project team to the source, a town near Carrara in Italy, to personally select the stone for a house in the D.C. area. The firm is known for exquisite traditional, transitional, and the occasional modern project. Read the firm’s blog about the trip here.
