Project name: Slam Reitz (Basement Over $100,000)
An approximately 1,300 sq. ft. unfinished basement was remodeled into a media/family room, billiard area, wet bar, bedroom, wine cellar and bathroom with shower. The project had many challenges including unfinished poured walls, concrete floors, exposed ceiling joists, uncovered duct work, and pipes and vales needing to be enclosed in soffits. Access to water and gas lines had to be maintained through vent covers installed in the ceiling. An engineered subfloor paneling system was installed throughout the lower level to promote energy efficiency; reduce the potential for mold and mildew; and protect the floor, furniture and electronics. In an effort to complement the rest of the home and create a seamless transition between levels, six-panel doors, casing and baseboard in the same size and style were located and installed. The homeowners requested a grand display in the billiard room to house their cue racks, so a “Bourbon Barrel” concept was suggested. Twelve authentic bourbon barrels were transported from out of state, maneuvered to the lower level of the home, dissembled and used to create an 8- by 8-ft. wall art display — the theme continues into the bar area. A custom-build entertainment center in the media/family room accommodates a large theater screen, speakers, and necessary A/V components and equipment. Within the bar area, custom walnut cabinets include fluted columns, curved arches, wood-frame glass shelving and display risers, and a brick backdrop coordinates with the wine cellar’s exterior/interior. An elaborate ceiling in the wine cellar complements the adjacent arched iron door and window with a double-barrel roll; custom stone and brick work appears in and outside of the room.
