A light-filled spacious room with amenities such as a steam shower, increased storage space and a free-standing tub topped the clients’ wish list in this suburban Chicago master bath remodel. The homeowners enjoy spending time at the beach so the overall concept became to create a bath that reflected that ambiance and their lifestyle. Organic design elements such as curves, soft colors, lighting, pattern and movement reminiscent of nature helped achieve that goal. The existing space had many hard, geometric lines, which the team was challenged with eliminating while maintaining the existing plumbing and footprint location. Some areas of the room were narrower than others and ceiling fixtures and windows were to remain as-is. Vanities were replaced with white cabinets topped with a grained quartzite countertop. The curve of the tile mimics the tub shape and creates the illusion the room is wider than it is; a curved soffit and countertop wrapping around the steam shower also helps. Shaped like a boat, the free-standing sculptural tub becomes the bathroom’s focal point. A subtle floral pattern on the tile further complements the organic nature of the space.
